Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University

Activities: Expand, Experience, Explore

Expand your journalism skills.

Each two-week session expands students’ journalism skills through hands-on, real-life learning. For on-campus students, we make the entire city of Boston the reporting beat. Guided by award-winning working journalists, students report and write on what’s happening in real-time: government, business, sports, crime, courts, the arts and more. We also expose students to techniques for investigations, with introductions to the Freedom of Information Act and public databases. All of it is supplemented by visits to local newsrooms and guest talks from reporter pros.

Experience a taste of campus life.

For on-campus students, the Summer Journalism Academy also serves as an exploration of campus life. Students not commuting from home live in Boston University residence halls and eat at the student dining hall. Instructors use materials from college courses and give students the freedom to pursue their own stories. Students have the option to join BU’s state-of-the-art FitRec Center for workouts. Their temporary BU ID cards give them access to campus student center and libraries.

Explore the great city of Boston.

We’ve made time for on-campus students to explore Boston and all it has to offer. We bring them to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Common, and the Freedom Trail of the Revolutionary War, with optional tours of Fenway Park and other sites. Independently or with supervision from BU peer advisers, students can explore Harvard Square or shop on Newbury Street. Many students take advantage of the trip to schedule college tours with Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Tufts, Emerson, Northeastern and the many other schools in the area.
