How to Sell an Experience: Storytelling with Words & Images

DAY ONE: 9am – 4pm

Presentation:

  • Overview of authentic storytelling; narrative structure; visual storytelling; and the power of editing.

Case Studies:

  • The instructors will outline the process of storytelling using classic examples of storytelling, and their own work.

12:00pm – 1:00pm

Lunch – A box lunch will be provided.

1:00pm – 4:00pm

Presentation:

  • Visual Storytelling
    • Overview of the principles of photography, videography, editing, and structure.
  • Narrative Storytelling
    • How to write clear, concise, descriptive prose across various mediums.

Group Project:

  • In small groups, participants will brainstorm ideas for a story and storyboard that could be used to market an experience. The story that will be fleshed out in the afternoon session on Day 2.
DAY TWO: 9am – 4pm

9:00Am – 12:00pm

Hands-on Exercise:

  • Attendees will use a “narrative structure scorecard” developed during the previous day’s class to outline the narrative arc present in a classic film. The class will watch the film and track the story “beats” discussed the previous day.

Presentation:

  • Following the film, the instructors will:
    • Flesh out the narrative structure diagram from the previous day using details from the film
    • Point out the distinctive visual elements from the film
    • Discuss how to scale story for the web content and short narrative marketing videos

12:00pm – 1:00pm

Lunch – A box lunch will be provided.

1:00pm – 3:00pm

Individual Project:

  • With coaching from our presenters, participants will each create a storyboard for a digital narrative story that extends their company, client, or personal brand and can be used as part of a marketing campaign on social media or other digital platforms.

3:00pm – 4:00pm

Final Presentations:

  • Individuals or groups will volunteer to present their story boards for feedback.
